Having long served as Hertfordshire’s trusted local scrap merchant, we’ve learned a lot about our industry and its ins and outs. That’s why this we came up with this blog post: to share some interesting facts on scrap metal with both clients and interested parties who might be delving deep on Google! After all, who doesn’t love adding a few facts to the sum of their knowledge? You never know when it might come in handy…. perhaps the next pub quiz, or in a wager with a friend!
We’re aware that some people current reading this article, however, may have found it while searching for reputable scrap merchants covering the Hertfordshire area; don’t worry, it happens all the time… If you’re more interested in selling a scrap metal commission to our team for top dollar, pick up the phone and call 01992 642 066 or 01992 625 622.
First of all, did you know that the amount of scrap metal recycled throughout Hertfordshire and the wider UK exceeds a whopping ten million tonnes? This keeps well over ten thousand UK workers in the job, including our own scrap merchants! But what of the different scrap metals that make up this overall contribution…?
Aluminium – Some interesting facts include that over three quarters of aluminium manufactured world wide is still in circulation today – making it one of the most recycled scrap metals out there. This is fantastic news when you dig further into the facts, for recycling aluminium uses 95% less energy than manufacturing it from scratch. All the more reason for Hertfordshire clients to consider selling large quantities of aluminium to our Hertfordshire scrap merchants. What’s more, the recycling process can be repeated endlessly!
Copper – …and the same goes for copper. Saving 85% manufacture over creating it from scratch, copper’s contribution to the scrap metal market helps reduce related CO2 emissions by 65%. So we recommend Hertfordshire clients keep an eye out when disposing of coins, cooking utensils, instruments, roofing, cladding and electrical devices of all sorts. It’s massively in demand, so prices tend to be good (at least at the moment of writing this).
Steel – If we had to hedge our bets, we’d estimate that steel is the most recycled scrap metal out there; not just in Hertfordshire and the wider UK, but worldwide. After all, cars are chock full of the stuff and are very commonly sold to scrap merchants like ours. Steel being recycled reduces CO2 emissions by 80%, next to the amount produced from making it new. On top of that, it almost halves the quantity of water used in the process. Another interesting fact is that around three quarters of all recycled steel is shipped off for sale in foreign markets! This shows how much the UK excels in steel scrap metal recycling.
